Poindexter
America's growing investment in city life has led to a wave of residential takeovers that is changing the face of urban neighborhoods. Gentrification is the act commonly identified by the reconstructing, rent increase and demographic change in a residential area. This infiltrating can have class and racial implications. Locally, gentrification can be witnessed in the Poindexter Village housing projects in the near east side of Columbus. A historical landmark embedded in Columbus, Poindexter Village was one of the first low income housing developments in the country. With a community comprised of almost exclusively people of color, Poindexter served as a hub of black life for Columbus. Starting 2010, Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority gave the approval for Poindexter to be demolished. As of 2012 all of the former residents have vacated. What lies in the future of this historical site remains to be seen. My goal with this work was to document the transformation of this area. Through the remnants of the former occupants, I wanted to tell a story of the life Poindexter once embodied and show the transition of a space, for better or worse.
